History Abandoned.

Century Manor in Hamilton, Ontario is one of the few buildings left standing which were part of what was formerly known as the Hamilton Asylum for the Insane, established in 1876. When first discovering this historic landmark, I had no knowledge about the dark and intricate histories of its past. Having said this, I took this opportunity to dig deeper past the visual aspects of this site, in order to learn about and truly recognize the complex history of this landmark.

Lost Letters.

Today several messages can be sent between two people in a matter of seconds. Compared to a time before technology when an individual would sit down and hand-write a thoughtful note which would be delivered to its recipient within a timeframe of days or weeks. This series stemmed from a collection of postcards, each with personal handwritten notes, dating back to 1908. Through this series I’ve documented a transition from what could be considered a lost art form, to a world of digital takeover and lack of personal touch.

History Flows.

At the root of Hamilton’s industrialism are 156 waterfalls, both beautiful and rich with history, which jump-started these industries, providing power to several mills throughout the 1800’s.

Today, Hamilton’s thriving industries and its waterfalls are entirely separate elements. Many of the waterfalls can be visited as recreational attractions. However, many people are unaware of their hidden histories. Through this project I have brought the two elements back together, revealing the detailed histories behind five of the falls.
